A community volunteer-led organisation, with a mission to grow more food locally
and share relevant knowledge and skills.
'Get Growing' Event
The main events of the Big Onion year start with
Easter Pancake Day. However during the winter we will be organising informal planning meetings and work parties.
To join the mailing list to hear about these events please email
sustainablestaveley@googlemail.com
Staveley Big Onion grew out of Pancake Day, held on Easter Sunday 2011. Weekly events were held over the summer where local fruit and veg was traded, sold and swapped. Cakes and teas and coffees were sold in the volunteer run cafe and talks from various speakers on topics such as growing, keeping hens, wild food, composting etc were all held in the Pavilion. Other events and activities included supporting Apple Day, Staveley Winter Festival and Staveley Harvest Festival, running a Pumpkin themed event at Starley's, producing a local food map for the village, starting work on a small Forest Garden on the Recreation Ground and planting veg and herbs for all to harvest in the Mill Yard (with other sites planned). At Easter 2012 the Big Onion will return to the Pavilion. To join the mailing list email sustainablestaveley@googlemail.com or look out for posters on the noticeboards.
Read about some of the achievments of the Big Onion during 2011 in the latest SENS newsletter here.

This map was put together collaboratively with Alan Lord in 2011 as part of the Staveley Big Onion. If you have any updates or suggestions please email sustainablestaveley@googlemail.com
